It's located on the Central Volcanic Mountain Chain of Costa Rica.

The Irazú Volcano is still active. It has a long history of eruptive cycles, wich was caused serious damage in the country. Several of the most important rivers of Costa Rica are formed in the forest of the park, for example the Chirripó, Reventazón, Sarapiquí and Grande de Tárcoles.

It also has become an important point of interest for tourist and ecological enthusiasts and scientist. It has a wide variety of flora and fauna, its forests are almost untouched by human hand, its climate conditions and other chacacteristics, make the park an important center of attraction and investigation.
