This is the site of the ruins of the unfinished parish temple of Santiago Apóstol, in Cartago City.

The so called Ruinas de Cartago are located east of the Main Plaza of the City. Its construction started during the second half of the XIX century. In May 4 1910, the Santa Mónica earthquake damaged the structure and stopped the builders from finishing the edification.

Several attempts of rebuilding the temple where made, being interrupted always by some natural event. Finally the Costa Rican goverment declared the site as of historical and tourist interest, stopping any attempt of rebuild the structure again. Today, it has become one of the most interesting tourist attractions of Cartago.
